Program

The studio will investigate Wards Island’s potential for new mixed-use residential programs along the water’s edge. The focus will be placed on creating a synthetic shoreline, which generates both a linkage to the other sides of the East River as well as a new geographic terrain to stimulate unexpected organizations, growth, and usage. The project will dwell on land as much as it will on water and expand on the already existing themes of renegade institutions and wastewater treatment facilities. Specific programmatic distributions, traffic circulation, and phasing strategies will be assessed and determined based on the individual student research

Design Strategy

The studio will be introduced to advanced digital techniques with focus on dynamic and parametric modeling. These techniques will be utilized not only to generate formal organizations and structures but also to challenge and re-formulate established notions of urban planning. Inherent in the methodology of dynamic and parametric modeling are concepts of kinesis, feedback, connectivity, adaptability, differentiation and variability, all of which will be investigated towards their potential for novel design strategies. In addition, the studio will familiarize itself with precedents of utopian and visionary city concepts as envisaged by architects, theorists, and filmmakers. Film, particularly the genre of Sci-Fi, will be examined vis-à-vis questions of technology, mood, and atmosphere.
